About this calculator

Personal income tax, the Medicare levy, HELP/HECS repayments and the Superannuation Guarantee are set by federal (Australian Government / ATO) law and are the same in every state — there is no separate "Victorian income tax". This tool is framed for Victorian workers and uses the current federal rates.

Award-specific penalty rates (for public holidays, weekends and shift work) vary by industry award and are out of scope here. Medicare levy family thresholds are not calculated (singles low-income shade-in only). This tool estimates annual tax payable, which can differ from the per-pay PAYG amount on your payslip.

Rates as at 1 July 2025 (FY 2025-26). Verify current figures at ato.gov.au each 1 July.

What Is the Pay Calculator VIC?

The Pay Calculator VIC runs the amount you enter through federal Australian tax settings. Because the employee tax calculation is federal, a Melbourne salary and a regional Victoria salary produce the same net pay at the same Gross Income. Victoria charges no state income tax on wages.

Pick your cycle

Choose Hourly, Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly or Annually. The tool converts across all 5 cycles at once.

Switch on Options

Turn on the toggles that apply to you — super, student loan, non-resident, surcharge and more.

Read the Summary

Review the Summary table across Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly and Annually columns.

Contractors comparing business income against employee income should use the Contractor Calculator instead.

Your Pay

Enter your income details in 3 fields: the pay amount, the pay cycle and your weekly hours. A casual rate of $42 per hour over 38 hours becomes $1,596 weekly, $3,192 fortnightly and $82,992 annually. Weekly hours drive the hourly conversion, so a part-time VIC role on 22 hours returns a different hourly rate to a full-time salary of the same annual value.

Options — 8 Toggles

The Options panel holds 8 toggles that change your Taxable Income, tax withholding or super treatment:

Medicare Levy ExemptionRemoves the 2% Medicare Levy for taxpayers who hold an ATO exemption category.
Includes SuperannuationTreats the figure entered as a super-inclusive package rather than plus-super.
No Private Hospital CoverApplies the Medicare Levy Surcharge once income passes the surcharge threshold.
Non-ResidentForeign resident rates — start at 30% with no tax-free threshold and no Medicare Levy.
Working Holiday VisaApplies subclass 417 and 462 rates, which start at 15% from the first dollar.
No tax-free thresholdRemoves the $18,200 tax-free threshold — the setting for a second job.
Student Loan (HELP, VET, SSL, TSL, SFSS)Adds the compulsory HECS and HELP repayment to your withholding.
Withhold Tax OffsetsApplies Tax Offsets such as the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) inside the estimate.

Victoria Tax Rates (2026-27)

Victoria charges no state income tax on wages, so the rates below are federal Australian tax rates that apply to every Victorian employee. Victoria does charge payroll tax — 4.85% metropolitan and 1.2125% regional on Australian wages above the $1,000,000 annual threshold ($83,333 monthly) — paid by the Employer, not deducted from your wage.

Income Tax Brackets

$135,001 – $190,000$31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
$190,001 and over$51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

Rates exclude the Medicare Levy. The second rate dropped from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026. Foreign residents pay 30% up to $135,000 with no tax-free threshold; Working Holiday Visa holders pay 15% up to $45,000. The Low Income Tax Offset gives up to $700 to taxpayers earning $37,500 or less and cuts out at $66,667.

Study Loan repayments sit outside the Income Tax brackets and apply to HELP, VET, SSL, TSL and SFSS debts.

Medicare Levy

Medicare Levy Thresholds

The Medicare Levy is 2% of Taxable Income for most Australian residents. Singles pay nothing at or below the lower threshold of $28,011 and a reduced rate up to $35,013. Seniors and pensioners entitled to SAPTO have a lower threshold of $44,268 and upper of $55,335. The family lower threshold is $47,238 and rises by $4,338 for each dependent child or student.

The Medicare Levy Surcharge is a separate 1%–1.5% charge for high earners with No Private Hospital Cover. Singles pay it above $105,000 and families above $210,000 — 1% to $122,000, 1.25% to $164,000 and 1.5% above $164,000. Holding an approved hospital policy removes the surcharge.

💼 Superannuation Guarantee — 12%

The Super Guarantee rate is 12% of qualifying earnings in 2026-27 — the final legislated step. An $85,000 plus-super salary attracts $10,200 in employer contributions, while an $85,000 super-inclusive package holds $9,107 of super inside the $85,000. Payday Super started 1 July 2026, so contributions reach your fund within 7 business days of each payday. The maximum contribution base for 2026-27 is $270,830, capping compulsory employer contributions at $32,499.60.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, take-home pay in Victoria matches take-home pay in every other state at the same Gross Income. The employee tax calculation is federal, so the same Australian Income Tax brackets, Medicare Levy, Superannuation Guarantee and Study Loan rules apply. State differences show up in wage levels and award coverage, not in the tax formula.
Yes, the Pay Calculator VIC covers Melbourne salaries and every other Victorian location. Enter the salary or wage amount, choose the pay cycle, and the calculator returns Melbourne take-home pay across weekly, fortnightly, monthly and annual columns. A Geelong hourly rate and a Melbourne CBD salary run through the identical federal Australian tax settings.
No, the Pay Calculator VIC produces a planning estimate rather than payroll advice. Withholding on your pay slip can differ through salary sacrifice, leave loading, backpay, allowances and mid-year pay changes. Confirm exact withholding with your Employer, payroll provider or Accountant, and check award classification and penalty rates with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
